Description

Chick fil A Waffle Fries Recipes are a fan favorite. In this article, we’ll explore the history of Waffle Fries, their cultural significance, and share a step-by-step recipe to recreate this iconic side dish at home.

Ingredients

Scale

    • 4 large russet potatoes (about 2 lbs)

    • 3 cups cold water

    • 1 tablespoon white vinegar

    • 1 teaspoon salt (for soaking)

    • 4 cups peanut oil (or vegetable oil, for frying)

    • 1 teaspoon salt (for seasoning)

    • ½ teaspoon black pepper (for seasoning)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes

    1. Wash and Peel: Start by washing the potatoes thoroughly under cold water. Peel them if desired, though leaving the skin on can add extra texture and flavor.

    1. Cut into Waffle Shapes: Using a mandoline slicer with a waffle blade, carefully slice the potatoes into waffle-cut shapes. If you don’t have a mandoline, you can use a sharp knife to create a similar pattern, though it may take more time and precision.

    1. Soak the Fries: In a large bowl, combine the cold water, white vinegar, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Add the waffle-cut potatoes and let them soak for at least 30 minutes (or up to 2 hours). This step helps remove excess starch, resulting in crispier fries.

Step 2: Dry the Potatoes

    1. After soaking, drain the potatoes and pat them dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels. Ensuring the potatoes are completely dry is crucial for achieving a crispy texture when frying.

Step 3: Fry the Waffle Fries

    1. Heat the Oil: In a large, heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer, heat the peanut oil to 325°F (163°C). Use a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature.

    1. First Fry: Carefully add a handful of the waffle-cut potatoes to the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for 3-4 minutes, or until the fries are lightly golden but not fully cooked. Remove them with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined tray to drain. Repeat with the remaining potatoes.

    1. Second Fry: Increase the oil temperature to 375°F (190°C). Fry the potatoes again in batches for 2-3 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on fresh paper towels.

Step 4: Season and Serve

    1. While the fries are still hot, season them with the remaining salt and black pepper. Toss gently to ensure even seasoning.

    1. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauces, such as Chick-fil-A sauce, ketchup, or ranch dressing.

Notes

  • Choose the Right Potatoes: Russet potatoes are ideal for frying due to their high starch content, which results in a fluffy interior and crispy exterior.
  • Soak the Potatoes: Don’t skip the soaking step! It removes excess starch and prevents the fries from sticking together during frying.
  • Double Fry for Crispiness: The two-step frying process ensures that the fries are cooked through and perfectly crispy.
  • Season While Hot: Always season the fries immediately after frying to help the salt and pepper adhere to the surface.
